D N Road

By a quirk of fate, it seems that a committee of stupid people wants the hawkers to be back on DN road. For years and years, the hawkers lined up DN road and destroyed what is truly a magnificient urban corridor, comparable to the best in the world. Then through the initiatives of many sane people, the hawkers were removed/relocated and the area cleaned up. Alas, if people have their way, it will become a hawker zone!

The committee has proposed that Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road–the stretch from Crawford Market to Flora Fountain is lined with heritage buildings–be a designated hawking zone.

And protesting the move to wilfully congest the access road to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)–listed as a World Heritage Site only this year–the Heritage Mile Association, a five-year-old organisation of shopkeepers and activists, has also filed an intervention in the Supreme Court, coming up for hearing on Tuesday.

”If CST is listed as endangered,” said conservation architect and association member Abha Narain Lambah, ”it’ll be loss of face as well as millions of dollars from heritage tourism”. After all, Mumbai is the only city worldwide with two World Heritage Sites–Elephanta Caves and CST.
