Today I received an email from my domain registrar for some .IN domains I own and manage. Read ahead for the actual email. It basically informs me that the .IN registry is down due to flooding in Bombay.
In this day and age, we take the internet for granted. If it does not work, its always the fault of the computer, the tel co., the cable company, or the ISP. Its unthinkable that a whole chunk of websites can be down because the registry servers are out.
The internet is one of the most virtual of concepts. With news like this, one is reminded that however virtual it may be, most things are grounded in reality and physicality.
Most of the world now relies on internet communications worldwide (OK at least in the western world). Can you imagine tomorrow if the dot com domain registry servers went down. The situation is hypothetical, because from what i know, there are multiple mirror servers in multiple locations around the world.
But what if…The scenario is scary,
Read the email and make up your mind.

Subject: .IN Registry Problems: Domain names not resolvingDear Business Solutions Customer,
Please be advised that the .IN Registry is currently experiencing certain technical difficulties.
Due to Heavy rains and flooding in Mumbai, India has damaged the .IN Registry’s Name Servers. This has hampered DNS propagation, with the result that your Customers’ .IN domain names might not resolve to their websites for the time being.
The .IN Registry and its providers are currently working post-haste to rectify the situation, which has affected all Registrars in equal proportion. We are in incessant contact with the Registry, and hope to have normal functioning restored as soon as possible.
We regret the inconvenience this has caused you, and appreciate your patience in this matter. Rest assured, we shall constantly keep you updated with any fresh developments on this issue, via notifications posted on the Support Help Desk.
Please feel free to contact us, with any doubts/queries you might have.
Warm regards,
Business Solutions Support Team
