I completely agree with the stance of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said
it was important for Europe to “take care that we do not retreat out of a fear of potentially violent radicals. Self-censorship out of fear is not tolerable”.
This was in response to the new controversey brewing up because
The German chancellor’s remarks to Hanover’s Neue Presse newspaper came within hours of Berlin’s Deutsche Oper hotly defending its decision to cancel Mozart’s ‘Idomeneo’, which showed the severed heads of the Prophet Mohammad, Buddha, Jesus and the Greek sea god Poseidon.
The opera house justified its decision to take the new show off the boards citing police warnings that it could pose an ‘incalculable’ security risk. It said, in a statement, “We know the consequences of the conflict over the (Muhammad) caricatures”. Kirsten Harms of the Deutsche Opera defended her decision, which she described as “weighing artistic freedom and freedom of a theatre … against the question of security for people’s lives.”
Why is it that our civilized society has one set of standards for all religions and then one set for one !! Where is Bal Thakeray [sic] when we need him!!
